About

The St Robert’s Centre Harrogate opened its doors for business in September 1998 as a Community Centre. Its main use is for letting rooms out for general hire. This followed a substantial refurbishment and re-building programme, aided by a generous National Lottery Grant provided under the Good Causes Scheme of the late 1990’s.

The Centre evolved out of the existing Victorian premises, which had been owned by St Robert’s RC Church for many years, but which had fallen into a state of disrepair through the passage of time. The building used to be called Our Lady’s Villa, and it had served the parishioners of St Robert’s for very many years as a focal point for meetings, social events, and parish business. Even the church football team used the Villa, with the basement acting as its changing room on match days, in the times when amateur football was played on The Stray, prior to the completion of the new Jennyfields sports fields’ complex in 2000.

The Lottery Funding enabled the old villa to receive a complete make-over with substantial work being carried out to ensure that the building fabric was up to modern standards, and particular attention was paid to ensuring that the basement area was properly waterproofed and sound, given that the makeover also included a ‘state of the art’ new kitchen in the basement from which many meals have subsequently been prepared for a host of Parish functions.

A Lift was also installed for up to 8 people at a time, to ensure that there was free movement around the building particularly for those users of the Centre who might otherwise be challenged by the stairs from ground to first floor or to the basement. The lift also aided the movement of tables and chairs for the various function rooms.

Under the auspices of the Lottery Grant, St Robert’s Centre had a threefold purpose but primarily it was to be at the heart of the St Robert’s Church community. It was also charged with hiring out its facilities to local community groups and it was also available for commercial hire. The aim was to make the Centre a self-financing entity, with the management and upkeep of the Centre being funded from the income derived from its rooms hire.
